Georgia teen accused of murdering grandmother

On Behalf of | Jul 23, 2020 | Felonies |

In early July, Georgia authorities arrested a 17-year-old girl for allegedly murdering her grandmother at a residence in Fayette County. She was reportedly taken into custody without incident.

News outlets say that deputies from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a medical issue at the Four Seasons Mobile Home Park in Fayetteville on July 6. Once on the scene, investigators found the body of the defendant’s 66-year-old grandmother and determined that she may have been the victim of domestic violence. They arrested the defendant, who lived at the residence with her grandmother and other family members, and transported her to the Fayette County Jail for processing.

The defendant, who is being held without bond, is facing charges of felony murder and aggravated assault. Though she is still a teenager, she is being charged as an adult. If convicted, she could be sentenced to up to life in prison or the death penalty. In Georgia, felony murder charges may be applied to cases that involve a homicide committed in the process of a felony, such as a robbery. Meanwhile, aggravated assault charges can stem from assault with the intent to murder as well as incidents involving a victim who is a police officer or who is age 65 or above.

Individuals charged with murder and other violent cries might think they have limited defense options available to them. However, with the help of a criminal defense attorney, defendants might be able to successfully fight the allegations and protect their future. While reviewing the case, the attorney might find evidence that counters the prosecution’s version of events. Alternatively, legal counsel may suggest negotiating a plea deal for significantly reduced charges and penalties.
