Employee faces drug charges after alleged theft of medications

On Behalf of | Oct 11, 2019 | Drug Charges |

In Georgia, there might be a perception that drug charges will be made when a person is selling drugs at any level or is caught with the drugs in his or her possession for personal use or otherwise. However, there are many situations in which a person can face allegations of drug violations and there can be severe penalties if there is a conviction. In some cases, a person is in a position of authority and has access to drugs – often prescription drugs – and will be accused of taking them. When this happens, it is just as important to have a strong defense as it is with other types of drug cases.

A school nurse is confronted with drug charges after medications that were meant for students at the school were found missing. The woman, 38, is alleged to have taken medications that were worth more than $1,500. When she was searched by law enforcement, she had various pills on her including Ritalin and Adderall. These drugs are stimulants. Often, they are prescribed for those who are suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). For those who want to use them for other purposes, the drugs can make people feel euphoric and have mental benefits. She is now on administrative leave from her job. She is charged with a felony for theft.

Prescription drug violations can be just as serious as charges in which a person is accused of involvement with cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and others. Whether it is a person who is accused of drug distribution, trafficking, low-level sales or possession to use on their own, there can be severe consequences for a conviction and these can impact the personal and professional life. For those who were taking drugs from their workplace and are accused of theft as part of the drug charges, the penalties can be severe. To have a reasonable chance at a desirable outcome such as plea agreement or an outright acquittal, having legal help can be vital.

For people who are in a similar situation as this nurse, there could be extenuating circumstances such as addiction that led to the accusations of theft of drugs. Other issues could be a factor. To formulate a reasonable defense, a law firm experienced in assisting those arrested for felony drug charges might be able to help.
